LETTER: Accident risks at crossing

The reconfigured pedestrian crossing at the junction of the Bishopric and Albion Way in Horsham is not very '˜user friendly' and in recent weeks I have witnessed two near misses between pedestrians and oncoming cars.

The most recent incident was when an elderly lady went to step into the road in front of an oncoming car that she did not see.

Four of us also waiting to cross simultaneously shrieked out to her and this stopped her and prevented what could have been a nasty accident.

On the previous occasion some young boys were crossing with one dashing straight out in front of an oncoming car. This young man thought the incident highly amusing. It would have been less amusing for him, his parents and the driver of the car had he been seriously injured or killed.

The crossing lights don’t seem to have been placed in the correct position for pedestrians to see easily.

Pedestrians, including us, can often be seen ‘dithering’ as they try to see whether it is safe to cross or not.

It will only be a question of time before there is a nasty accident here and those involved will have to live with, possibly, life changing consequences.
