LETTER: An Ode to the Shelley Fountain

A big old heap of junk?
Just what you are remains unclear.
Except that you’re defunct.
You used to work – I’ll give you that.
It was a bizarre show.
Torrents flowed from within your bowels.
And then - back up you’d go.
The children screamed, old ladies stared.
The youths chucked litter in.
And I still can’t make up my mind
If you were great or grim.
But now, as you prepare to leave
I find myself quite sad.
That Great Big Ball with pigeons on
Wasn’t really all that bad.
A water feature most unique.
I’ve never seen one like it.
We may yet miss your tacky bulk
However much we fight it.
Your absence will be rather stark.
What shall come to replace you?
For twenty years you’ve loitered there.
Now where will they take you?
Last month my son did break his leg
Beneath your bulbous mass.
You’d think that I might hate your guts.
But no – I’m not that crass.
A broken leg’s a tale to tell.
The venue is historic.
No longer can he shout at folk -
“Look! That’s just where I snapped it!”
So…
I guess I’m trying to confess
That even though I’ve scorned,
Our Shelley Fountain will be missed.
Nay - may even be mourned.
There will be those that wave you off
With joyful shouts of glee.
But, despite the recent broken bone,
It certainly won’t be me.
And if you find you’re cast aside
And heading for the bin,
I have a massive garden here.
You’d really fit right in.
Goodbye, Shelley Fountain.
Our time has come to part.
Whatever all your critics say,
To me, you’re a work of Art.
