LETTER: Appeal parking penalties

In your edition of April 21 you featured an article and a letter relating to parking in Haywards Heath. The feature, Complaint over Station Parking, concerned a penalty applied to parking without showing a valid parking ticket, despite the fact that the driver had purchased one but not displayed it, as there was no indication that this was required.

We have been to several car parks recently at which display was not required. I too have received a penalty notice for the same ‘offence’ against which I appealed on 12th April, although I have not yet had a response other than an acknowledgement of receipt.

The firm in charge of the car park, Indigo Parking on behalf of Southern Rail, seems to be very inefficient and unhelpful, it may be that the latter accounts for frustrated motorists parking illegally, rather than risk the outrageous penalties which Indigo impose.

I think that there are several reasons why Indigo cannot enforce their demands, all of which were included in my appeal, but particularly the dearth of prominent notices stating that the station car park is ‘Pay and Display’.

Even Southern’s response to you suggest that they are aware of this deficiency. I will be contesting Indigo’s efforts to impose one all the way, and hope that others in the same position will likewise lodge and pursue an appeal – the more of us who do so, the more likely we are to succeed.
