LETTER: British chose freedom

It is quite astounding how a nation can in one generation abandon its national principles and aspirations, upheld over centuries and wish to stand its country on its head.

When I was young the British people still fervently believed in the democratic principle of self political determination maintained by self governance and administered by elected leaders.

When in 1939 the countries of Europe were over-run by totalitarian dictators the British people took up arms in a long and procrastinated war of liberation and together with most of the civilised world eradicated that tyranny and returned to the countries of Europe their right to self political determination.

It was not long however before Germany, the original aggressor, had persuaded the countries of Europe by enticements of future wealth to unite in a political scheme that soon revealed the original intention, a political dictatorship domineered by Germany and run and administered by unelected, unaccountable and irremovable bureaucrats.

So much for the poor deceived people of Europe, but the British people were taken in too, albeit by lies and deceits fed to them by their own elected politicians who persuaded them that the EEC was only about trade.

Gradually the British people smelt a rat. The discontent grew as the dictatorship based in Brussels gained in confidence and became increasingly strident, until the British government, acting as a willing administration for that dictatorship, was forced into holding a referendum on whether to return to being a free people of free political determination or remain as political serfs to a foreign dictatorial power.

In that referendum the British people chose freedom as opposed to political tyranny but the result was not as clear cut as one might have expected. A great many people wished to remain in the dictatorship, preferring perhaps not to see it as such and there are none so blind as those who do not wish to see.

Perhaps the thought of having to govern themselves simply seemed to be too much trouble, it will certainly come as a shock to the politicians who up to now have never had to do it. Or could it be out of ignorance?

How many of those who voted to remain under the auspices of the EU treaties had read them or even knew the names of their unelected rulers? How many have any understanding of our common law constitution, unquestionably the greatest political administrative system in the world and on which the democracies of the civilised world are based? How many have any knowledge or understanding of our laws, Habeas Corpus as opposed to Corpus Juris, the Presumption of Innocence which is the antithesis of the European system?

Why should so many British people want to give up all these great benefits, rights and freedoms started by Alfred the Great in the ninth century and so have stood the test of time in exchange for a foreign tyrannical dictatorship?

If they naively believe that by staying in the EU peace in Europe will be maintained they delude themselves, ultimately all dictatorships end in revolution and tears. Perhaps they feel they can eventually dissuade the Germans from their intended direction to dominate Europe and beyond. If this is so again they delude themselves and clearly have underestimated the German resolve and self belief as experienced by my generation.

The kind of people who support dictatorships are invariably extreme right or left, Fascist or Communist, they do exist in our midst and they can be subtly persuasive, not forgetting that the subject of our common law constitution along with our lawful rights and liberties was deliberately dropped from our education syllabi many years ago.

As it happens the British people stood by their principle and rule of law and so set an example for the peoples of Europe to follow in regaining their political freedoms and human rights presently denied them by those who rule and aspire to even greater territorial ambitions.

We were forcibly united with and made citizens of a politically suppressed Europe, we are now once more a free people and will again unite with the people of Europe once they have regained their freedom in both free trade and friendship.
