LETTER: Buildings are wasting energy

As I pass several shops in the town centre now, blasts of cold air come out from open doors, and the insides of the shops are pleasantly cool.

Only a few months ago, there were ‘hot air curtains’ just inside the doors so that much hot air was simply wasted into the atmosphere while the shops inside were nice and warm.

Then there are the refrigeration units which often have open fronts and a ‘cold air curtain’ falling over the goods while the backs of the units are belting out heat.

Hastings is far from unique in this.

I recall passing an arcade in Hong Kong with an open front through which gales of cold air were gusting out.

Aquilla House and Conquest Hospital have ‘dog-leg’ entrances which are perhaps better. Both still however are inefficient at insulating the interior from the atmosphere.

Yes these arrangements make it easier for the public, especially if in wheelchairs or with prams, to gain access to the premises. However to me they are a gross waste of energy. Someone, somewhere should do something about it.
