LETTER: Condemnation of flat proposal

The proposal (HS/FA/16/00427) by a London based developer to demolish the Park Beck Nursing Home in Upper Maze Hill in order to erect an 70ft high tower block of 52 flats has attracted widespread public condemnation (HBC website, Hastings Observer 23/9/16).

The property is situated within the Markwick Gardens conservation area and has features of both historic and architectural value.

The application contravenes council policy (Hastings Development Plan 2015) in so many areas, it is difficult to see how such a proposal qualifies for consideration.

The developers failed to recognise the conservation status of the area, failed to consult adequately with local residents and crucially failed to consult with the council’s conservation officer before submitting their plan.

It is to be profoundly wished that the Planning Committee act in accordance with the council’s stated policies, uphold the principles of the conservation area and act decisively to reject the application.
