LETTER: Disappointed by MP's EU stance

I am very disappointed to learn that Arundel and South Downs MP Nick Herbert is leading the government group which will make the case for staying in the EU. I truly believed that he was a confirmed Eurosceptic.

I love Europe but hate the dinosaur the EU has become. Indeed its clear plans for moving towards a federal Europe are quite alarming.

The thought of Turkey becoming a member fills me also with great alarm.

There is no doubt that the aims of the EU leadership are towards a federal state.

I love Europe and its diverse cultures and indeed until about two years ago, my wife and I lived in France for six years.

When discussing the EU with French people, I was frequently reminded that they had voted against the EU constitution before it was rebranded as a treaty.

I am taking a long term view and strongly feel that the UK will perform better without the stranglehold of stupid and negative actions from the EU.

Outside the EU, we would again be able to take our seat at the world trade association.

If there are any negotiations to be carried out with the EU, it would be best if we concentrated on our position post exit. It is clearly in the interest of the other EU nations to retain a strong trading agreement with the UK, particularly as they still sell more to us that we do to them.

We need to be in control of our own destiny. This is not just an issue regarding immigration.

The EU is corrupt with its expenditure totally out of control. They exhort its members to practice austerity whilst increasing their own budget and member contributions.

They pay exorbitant salaries and have ridiculously generous pension schemes. No wonder the EU establishment want to protect their future.

The EU accounts have not been signed off for 21 years now.

The leader Jean-Paul Junker, was formally the prime minister of Luxembourg. In this role he actively encouraged major global companies to base their head offices there to minimise tax.

He now preaches the need to have fairer taxes across the EU.

Conversations locally would indicate that the majority of Nick Herbert’s constituents favour a leave Europe vote.

I hope as our representative in parliament, he takes these opinions seriously.

I also hope that there will be an opportunity for one or more local debates on this very important subject, when we might have the opportunity to try to understand why he has chosen the path to stay in Europe.

I am not a fruitcake. I used to be a member of the CBI and was for nine years the MD of the British wing of a Swedish Company.

I have extensive experience of trade within Europe.
