LETTER: Focus and feel before you Facebook

Wild West cowboys unwisely reaching for a gun were called '˜trigger happy'; today we whip out our smartphones to record many moments.

Sharing is an excellent aspect of social media - yet we can capture moments before we properly experience them ourselves because we’re concentrating on the best angles.

The Bible seems an unlikely commentator on mobile technology, but Paul offers some significant thoughts in his letter to the Corinthians. He said we perceive God as though ‘through a lens dimly’ but one day we will see Him ‘face to face’. For Paul, looking through glasses because his sight was failing, was vastly inferior to seeing God face to face with renewed eyes.

Of course using our mobile devices, there’s the photos to show others but the trade-off was that we missed being fully ‘in’ an unrepeatable moment ourselves - was it worth it?

So before you automatically reach for the smartphone - enjoy the moment yourself; focus and feel before you Facebook, try before you Tweet.

Imbibe before you Instagram.
