LETTER: Get traffic off the roads

They were afraid of upsetting the frogs and hedge hogs and other wild life, but with the new viaduct, wild life would have been able to go under the viaducts and life would have been fine.

When we walked the route I said to the inspector this will cost more than £90 million, as the sum was then.

The county council at the time said the road was to alleviate the traffic from the A259, with no mention of the houses Rother wanted to build.

At the Cabinet meeting at County Hall on March 8, Cllr Carl Maynard said how well the road was running, and time saved to the Conquest Hospital was a great benefit. Cllr Charles Clark mentioned the taxi drivers had said to him that they had saved a lot of time in going along the Link Road to get to Hastings.

Cllr Maynard also mentioned the growth that would follow, with some 2,000 homes north of Bexhill. Can you imagine if each house on average has one and a half cars – another two to three thousand cars coming out on the new road. We will just fill up another road.

At the same meeting Cllr Godfrey Daniel said reinstating the Lewes to Uckfield line was a piece of madness.

Is filling up our roads not a piece of madness?

We have too much traffic in our built-up areas now, and all the government think about is building more houses in the name of Growth.

Would it not be better to get the traffic off the roads, not only having a rail link from Lewes to Uckfield, but also from Polegate to Hellingly, or even on to Uckfield?

Yes it cost a lot of money, but it employs people. A cost to one is an income to another. Done wisely, it is the wisdom we seem to have lost.

Dare I mention it, but if we weren’t committed to some £54 million a day to the European Union, all these things could be paid for and we could have a good transport network. I rest my case. May be those members on East Sussex County Council pre-2013, who voted for the Link road, should be held responsible for the extra cost?
