LETTER: Healthy food in sports centre?

I'm sure most people will welcome the latest plans shown on the Horsham District Council website for the new Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre and would be pleased by the proposed modest increase in size of the café kitchen over the present.

How wrong they would be.

On another part of the HDC website try delving deep into the ‘View or Comment on Planning Applications’ and if you know the Application Number (DC/16/1844 to give you a hand) and you eventually find the ‘Design and Access Statement’ dated 12/08/16 and then turn to page 23 and then enlarge the page to maximum you might be able to see the kitchen has magically halved in size to 10 sq/m. Quite large for a cupboard!

In a Report to Cabinet titled ‘Proposals for the Redevelopment of Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre’ dated November 2015 you will find in the section headed ‘Outcome of Consultations’, comments referring to the detailed design.

A key one noted was ‘ensure catering capacity is sufficient – this is recognised as a commercial and community imperative’.

So what has happened to this ‘imperative’?

Why disregard the conclusions of your own consultations and virtually annihilate the hub of the café?

Don’t you want to provide healthy food in a sports centre that is meant to help people to be fit and able?
