LETTER: History must not be erased

Surely, regardless of age, it is incumbent upon human beings to seek knowledge from whatever source can benefit them. Should they at the appropriate age attain an opportunity to receive a university education then, whilst this should be considered a plus factor, it must be considered a privilege not a right. Notwithstanding excellent universities existing in Sussex, the Home Counties and in many other parts of England, it has always been accepted that being awarded a place at either Oxford or Cambridge is the pinnacle of achievement for a young man or woman.

Suddenly, however, the tail is attempting to wag the dog and in particular students are endeavouring to attack the very fabric and traditions of Oxford, a university that received great wealth from Cecil Rhodes which has enabled Rhodes Scholarships to be granted to countless students from all over the world. Oxford University is now being vilified by a racist renegade student and his followers under a campaign [to remove the Rhodes statue from outside Oriel College] which is undoubtedly of a political nature. How dare they act in such a manner when being seated in the halls of the greats that have gone before them? History cannot be erased simply to appease a minority. The solution against those objecting to time-honoured formalities and practices is simple. Let them resign and allow their places to be taken by eagerly waiting students who will be overjoyed to have the chance of grasping the moment.
