LETTER: MP confident of Treaty change?

So Conservative MP for Arundel and South Downs, Nick Herbert, is to lead the PM's bid to keep Britain in the EU.

He has always been clear on the needs i) to retain UK opt outs from the Eurozone, ii) from Schengen (open borders) and iii) for a British Bill of Rights, as seen from his 2013 communiqué.

Does his acceptance of this new mission, mean that he is confident of getting the ‘legally binding’ Treaty change - needed to achieve the above and to prevent ever closer union - before we are asked to vote?

His 2013 communiqué stated that ‘it is the people who will now decide’ and so we also need to know what he will do, if a majority votes to leave - and their decision is ignored.

That is particularly important for those who recall the outcome of French, Irish and Dutch referendums, after the people voted NO. I have asked him that question before, but he has not responded.

Many who voted for him, as a Eurosceptic, may be surprised at his seeming change of direction.

They will want to hear a) that he is confident of getting the above legally binding reforms, b) that he can protect us against ever closer union and c) what he will do if the will of the people is frustrated – after they vote to leave.

So Mr Herbert. Please tell us the answers to these questions, because many of your constituents need to know that voting, in the referendum, will not be a total waste of time.
