LETTER: Need for careful scrutiny of plan

I sincerely hope these new plans for sports facilities are looked at carefully and not rushed into without thought for the overall plans for our town. Of course people involved at Hastings United are going to be delighted when they are told they could have a brand new, bigger, better facility.

What then happens to the old ground? I know more housing! I know it is too late now but I think this town has been so short sighted in its approach so many times.

We didn’t (for a while) need so many secondary school places. The Grove School, even though it had a perfectly good sports hall and playing fields was knocked down in order to build houses and destroy yet more green space.

I know this has not started yet but it is in the plan. What a waste of facilities!

We suddenly need more school places for primary aged children, so knock down a school’s swimming pool and build more class rooms!

We are constantly told our children are overweight but what do we do, stop funding swimming pools at the primary schools and let them rot.

When I first started teaching in this town in 1970 there were six primary schools with pools and they were shared with neighbouring schools.

Now there are only two! Is this progress?

I know there are many agencies and owners involved but surely someone should think of the overall picture and try coordinating it all.
