I write to clarify Gatwick's position regarding a recent article '˜Airport objects to new hospice due to increase in bird strike risk hazard'.

While we have raised concerns about aspects of the plan, which could increase the risk of bird strike, it is important to note we do not object to a new hospice being built.

The application in question relates to a joint application for the construction of up to 600 dwellings, a primary school, retail, cafe, community building and a hospice.

Gatwick has no objections to the hospice itself, simply the large amount of permanent open water which would be an attractant to birds hazardous to aircraft.

Gatwick will be working closely with the council and the developers to agree an amended scheme without compromising the safe operation of the airport and our passengers, which is our priority.
