LETTER: North Horsham dumped on

Yet again residents in Horsham and the north of the district are to be used as the dumping ground for everything that Tory councillors in the south of the district do not want.

Cllr Vickers tore up the 2007 Core Strategy where any housing growth was to have been in Southwater allowing the Strategic Gap to be preserved.

But we know that Liberty have now submitted a planning application to Horsham District Council to build 2,750 homes and an industrial and warehouse park in the strategic gap.

Oh, and your readers may not know that a new crematorium which was to have been on the A272 will now go north of the A264. Tory councillors in the ‘deep south’ (ref. Cllr Peter Burgess) rejected the A272 location at their Southern Planning Committee two years ago.

Now, following a short five hour exhibition over only two days (Friday night for two hours and Saturday morning last week) with just a day’s notice we learn that BritaniaCrest are to submit a planning application this winter for a mass waste incinerator in North Horsham.

They wish to burn so much residential and commercial waste that they can provide enough energy ‘to power a small town’ (Britania Bulletin, Issue 1, October 2016).

Their poster boards champion the fact that their incinerator (although they don’t use that name) will be operational 24/7.

To feed such a hungry waste burner operating 24 hours per day and seven days per week will requires waste from beyond Horsham, let alone Horsham district. Such waste will come in dozens of HGVs from south London, Surrey and the coast. Their plans show an enormous building and a waste chimney which will be visible for miles.

Just what is our district council doing about this? Nothing - silence. The council planning supremo for the district Cllr Vickers has said nothing. She’s done nothing.

The Cabinet member for waste and recycling Cllr Cornell (who replaced Cllr Baldwin after Cllr Dawe publicly sacked Cllr Baldwin last June) has said nothing either. Cllr Dawe also has said nothing about this incinerator.

When will councillors at Horsham District Council rise up and rid themselves of a cabinet whose members say nothing and do nothing to fight for the interests of Horsham and its residents?

Why is our cabinet member for planning, Cllr Vickers’ not fighting to stop Horsham being destroyed in this way?
