LETTER: Not in realms of fantasy ...

I was highly amused over Christmas to read the local Dickens Society's definitive rejection of the writer Charles Dickens' (1812-1870) connection with Eastbourne. It is not in the realms of fantasy to imagine that he stepped off a train here one day, handed a boy some money and told him to find the fattest bird money could buy and give it to an appreciative family for a Christmas dinner. Equally amusing is a notice in a window telling me '˜Every wrap or burger specially prepared for you!' (and no doubt, every delicious mouthful specially savoured, chewed and swallowed by me!); and '˜Meadow View' yellow notices signposting the brand new houses built on the farmland beside Kings Drive near Eastbourne District General Hospital.
