LETTER: Outstanding local leader

I wanted to take this opportunity to remind your readers of the importance of the election for the post of the Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner which will take place on Thursday, 5th May.

This will be an important chance for the electors of Mid Sussex to exercise their democratic right by having their say on how policing is run in our area, who is best placed to set the strategic direction for our excellent police, who should hold our Chief Constable to account and who should determine how taxpayers’ money is spent on policing locally. These are big issues.

I believe that the work of the Police and Crime Commissioner, who replaced the old police authority which was opaque, ineffective and undemocratic, has, in Sussex been resoundingly, an unqualified success.

Katy Bourne, incidentally a Mid Sussex resident and the current PCC, was elected directly by local people and she has proved herself to be an outstanding local leader for policing. She has held our police force to account for operational delivery and is herself directly accountable to all of us in the strongest way possible - at the ballot box.

She has driven innovation with new ideas: she has shone a light on issues that matter most to local people and has driven significant efficiencies to save money for local taxpayers. She has also recently announced the recruitment of up to 100 new police officers in Sussex.

On the 5th May Mid Sussex people will decide who they believe is best placed to fulfil this really important local role for the next four years. I strongly commend Katy Bourne to you and wish her well in the election.
