LETTER: Path increases risk of injuries

I noted from a report on page nine of last week's Observer (18/11/16) that representatives from the Hastings Urban Bikes (HUB) group are seeking to put pressure on the council to introduce the proposed cycle route through Alexandra Park.

As a former county councillor safety manager of Hastings Borough Council, I have concerns about this proposal.

A couple of recent near misses from cyclists brushing by me from behind, without warning, while walking my dog in the park has convinced me that permitting dual use by cyclists and pedestrians on ‘footpaths’ throughout the park raises a significant risk of accidents and injuries, particularly involving younger children.

I hope that the local authority does not succumb to the demands of the HUB group and thinks again about the needs of the wider community who wish to safely use the pathways in this much cherished park.
