LETTER: Path shouldn't be shared

It is with the greatest concern that I have learnt, through the Petworth Neighbourhood Options Questionnaire, of the proposal that what is a public right of way across the Shimmings Valley, may in the future become '˜a new shared foot/cycle path parallel to North Street'.

The value of this ancient landscape surrounding the town has already been endorsed by the government with the status of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty within the South Downs National Park.

If the idea of the path is ‘to better connect Hampers Green to the town centre’, surely the measures also proposed ‘to calm traffic using natural methods rather than intrusive methods including at the town’s gateways, would in themselves create a better and safer connection to Petworth?

I hope that this proposal is not already set in stone, as I feel that it would lead to the loss of an irreplaceable part of a much loved landscape, not just for our generation, but for those to come for whom we should hold it in trust.
