LETTER: Pay extra to help children

Local councils are saying that the £40,000 to be provided by central government will not cover the costs of including these children in the care system. I am sure I am not alone in being more than willing that Mid-Sussex (or West Sussex - whichever authority is concerned here) should levy extra on my council tax for this purpose. If this is administratively impossible, I know that thousands of citizens would respond positively to an appeal by the council for this purpose. I feel it’s a special case, a new expense beyond the usual costs of assisting new arrivals in our country who are fleeing terror and persecution. So many of us feel distressed beyond measure that children - children! - often sent away in desperation by their parents, are here alone and potentially without the necessary public money to help them along.

Councils are woefully short of money already, and rather than take more more from social care, for instance, why not ask citizens to help here? The sums are not even large.
