LETTER: Reinstate the original name

I have read with concern your item in the Herald [April 1] about the possible re-naming of the seafront end of Terminus Road. I write as Vice President of the Local History Society and on behalf of numerous of our members. Perhaps your item was an April Fools' joke.

This stretch of road was known from the mid-19th century as Victoria Place, presumably in honour of the then Queen. The name was in keeping with those of the other roads running inland from Grand Parade: Burlington, Devonshire, Hartington, Trinity and Cavendish Places.

This name continued until January 1947 when, in the face of much dissent from Eastbournians, Victoria Place was renamed as a part of Terminus Road. Now, if a re-naming is needed, we strongly advise that the original name of Victoria Place is reinstated.

The word ‘boulevard’ is of French origin and usually denotes a large tree-lined avenue. It has little relevance to our town and frankly is rather pretentious if used in this context.
