LETTER: Retro-garb of culture vultures

How fortunate we are in Eastbourne to have so many opportunities for Culture. Despite the commercial necessity for low-brow theatre we do also enjoy some challenging productions.

We have a wide and varied choice of cultural, or sometimes it must be said, of pseudo-intellectual avtivities.

We are lucky to have sages amongst us who are ever ready to dispense wisdom and who are treated with the reverence due to high-priests, so they do pontificate.

Their encyclopaedic knowledge is drawn only from the best books of reference and from the most respected universities albeit of the second tier, and from that of the Third Age.

These sages come kitted-out in the retro-garb of their distant youth. Like Dorian Gray they believe that they are still the ‘beautiful people’. Malvolio and cross-gartering come to mind.
