LETTER: Sad reflection on our times

Various contributions to the question of a Chinese restaurant in Meads have seen some very one-sided and, in some cases, quite personal flak directed at Mr Thomas for his comments on the proposal [Letters, December 11]. Taken in the round, I suggest there was more than a grain of truth in some of the broader points that Mr Thomas raised, much of which would have resonated with some folk, perhaps even the silent majority. The discussion may now have run its course but it leaves behind a sad reflection on our times. What a sorry state we have come to when people cannot even state facts, however innocently, without the branding irons coming out and stifling reasonable, fair, and sensible debate on many a controversial issue.
