LETTER: Second person needed on train

This dispute has gone on for long enough.

It demonstrates Govia’s total incompetence in running a transport system. They should lose the franchise.

Commuters along the south coast and up to London are not the only sufferers here, I haven’t been able to get up to London without a struggle for over six months.

My wife had a hospital appointment in Southampton and we ended up going by taxi because two trains were cancelled – and a further two on the return.

I would like to know why the DfT has not ended this franchise. Is this another political move to crush union power? Whatever you call the second person on a train (guard, inspector...), they are needed to operate doors, deal with disabled ramps, check safety, deal with the public, check tickets, etc. The driver is there to drive the train.
