LETTER: Shameful mess at rail station

No doubt I, with millions of others, have experienced the problems with travelling by train. I personally don't travel to London often, but when I do I am usually late because of strikes or other reasons. Last week was particularly stressful for unusual reasons.

I got on a train that was announced as a Victoria train. Just before Lewes a garbled announcement was made that nobody understood.

Unfortunately it was to tell passengers that we should change at Lewes to get another train to Victoria.

As we did not understand what the message was, we ended up going to Brighton. So I was late for my appointment.

And this is what moved me to write to you. Waiting at Brighton for the train to London on Number 5 platform, I noticed about 10 magnificent Victorian pillars gracing the edge of the platform.

They were ceramic with attractive designs. Really beautiful. And they were filthy. And I mean filthy.

Plus at the side of the platform the accumulation of rubbish was shameful.

I asked a porter why someone did not clean the pillars, which are gems to see, and clean up the rubbish, to which he replied “I offered, but the rail people told me I could not do it as it was against health and safety regulations.” What utter rubbish, to make a pun!

I will say that I was ashamed of my country, ashamed of the people who run our lives, and ashamed that people from other countries should see this.
