LETTER: Shelley must be remembered

The removal of the controversial water feature, '˜Rising Universe' will leave Horsham without any meaningful memorial to its most famous son - the romantic poet - Percy Bysshe Shelley.

It was unveiled in 1996 to mark the bicentenary of his birth at Field Place on the outskirts of the town. That was the sole reason for the installation of Angela Conner’s work. When considering a replacement, for certain, Shelley should be given pride of place - perhaps in the form of a more conventional edifice.

After all, Shelley spent his boyhood in and around Horsham - and we should be proud of that fact - as our town has no other who can match his fame and the continuing lure of his poetic works world-wide.

It would be shameful if those who make the decision for a replacement for ‘Rising Universe’ choose to ignore Shelley. We should continue to venerate him for the contribution he made to our country’s cultural heritage. Nothing less will suffice.
