LETTER: Think before you criticise

I think our Seaford Town Councillors do a wonderful job. It's all too easy to criticise our elected volunteers (E W Hill, Herald Letter, February 5, and Ms Christine Brett, council meeting, January 28] but we do not see those that make the criticism serving on the council, do we. While constructive criticism is acceptable and is to be expected it's all too easy for those on the sidelines to make unfounded, inappropriate and sometimes unreasonably aggressive statements based on incomplete and subjective evidence.

For example, are your readers aware that most councillors spend hours preparing for meetings, working in the community and giving outside bodies support (which often includes the benefit of their professional expertise and experience). Not only have our town councillors voted not to be paid but they also cover their associated expenses too – a gift to the town which runs into several hundred pounds annually for many councillors.

So please do not be so prepared to criticise your elected councillors. Maybe you should give up your own time and money and stand for election if you think you can do better.
