LETTER: Transport to remote hospital

I have just picked up a copy of the new revised Metrobus timetable - hoping to see that we might just have a new direct bus route from Horsham to East Surrey Hospital at Redhill.

Most patients requiring hospital treatment are referred to East Surrey by our town’s four or five GP practices - but it is a nightmare of a journey - particularly for the elderly who cannot afford a return taxi fare - or those receiving eye treatment who are not allowed to drive.

In the past, there has been a great deal of public debate as to whether it is feasible to have a new hospital built in the Pease Pottage area to serve the ever growing population of Horsham and the surrounding communities.

But we were told that this was not practicable - doubtless on grounds of financial constraints and the huge cost of a modern hospital.

Fair enough - but surely our local authority could subsidise a regular Metrobus service to East Surrey Hospital?

Be assured that it would be well used and would relieve many patients from the Horsham area of the worry as to how they reach - often on a regular basis - the hospital to which they are referred by their General Practitioner, on time.

We may not be able to have a new hospital closer at hand - but surely it’s time to provide a reliable bus service for patients and their visitors.

Or is that asking too much of our elected council members?
