LETTER: Vote '˜Remain' for our future

If you vote to leave the EU, you are jeopardising the research funding to support my university education, you are jeopardising my chances of securing employment, you are jeopardising my future.

Some may say this is scaremongering but when three million jobs rely on our membership, it is common-sense to vote ‘Remain’. Share prices have fallen before we have even voted. If Britain votes to leave what will it mean for our economy?

Even if you ill-received President Obama’s comments, he illustrates the economic risk of leaving the EU.

President Obama says ‘It could take up to a decade to formulate a trade deal with the US outside the EU’.

That means that by the time we have ridden out ten years of uncertainty and negotiation with countries such as the US, people my age will no longer be students. We will be nearly 30, in full time employment, probably with a family of our own.

No credible international or domestic economic group or commentator has said the UK would be better off out of the EU. Leaving the EU, as a friend put it to me, would be ‘economic suicide’.

EU legislation also protects our future from a social aspect as we benefit from the European Convention on Human Rights. Regardless of who is in Government, it should be impossible to make potentially damaging changes to society. The EU is the most powerful check on Government, preventing them from doing as they please. Our rights are protected by the EU; it would be reckless to abandon this.

Although I accept the EU is not perfect, neither are we. To reform we have to be part of the wider legislative process.

If we are going to counter anything from global warming to international crises, we need collaboration of all 28 member states.

Britain cannot do this alone. Moreover, if we left, we would have a community of 27 states deciding legislation impacting us, but have no say. Brexit campaigners claim the EU damages our sovereignty; in reality it preserves it.

The In Campaign received 80 per cent of the vote in the Collyer’s Mock Referendum. The 375 of us urge you, on the 23rd June, to vote for our future and thereby vote ‘Remain’ in the EU Referendum.
