LETTER: What should be '˜normal'?

We've been having some unusual weather recently. Rain and more rain. It's been so mild. The daffodils were already out in December. That's not normal.

On the other hand, what is normal? The average December rainfall since records began – is that what we mean by normal? But how do we know that the recent rain isn’t a return to ‘normal’ after a centuries long dry patch?

To define normal you need some standard to be able to measure against. In the Bible the prophet Amos had a vision of a plumb-line. He believed that God was measuring his people’s goodness and finding them not up to scratch.

If we want a standard to measure ourselves against, there is no better person than Jesus. His life establishes what should be ‘normal’ for every human being – caring for the outcasts, helping the needy, enjoying the company of friends and celebrating life to the full.

According to God’s standards Jesus is the normal one. It’s the rest of us who are off kilter.
