LETTERS: Swearing part of tough story

I would like to comment on a couple of recent letters about the theatre, with two complaining about the language and the other praising the pantomime. If people had done their research they would know that Eastbourne would be getting the full version of The Jersey Boys, and if they had bothered to see the lesser-known show entitled '˜Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons' which played The Congress earlier in 2015 they would have discovered that in the early years the boys had a real life tough Hollywood actor involved in their lives renowned for his swearing. One would not expect him to come bouncing out on stage shouting, 'I say, old boy, that's not cricket.' I think the problem with '˜Jersey Boys' was people were expecting a musical show, instead of a tough nitty-gritty story with musical interludes. It was quite obvious the boys had a real uphill battle in their quest for fame and fortune and it would seem they met some very unsavoury characters. Personally I was pleased we did not get the watered down version and when my wife and I went on a Saturday there was no sign of any children in the audience so I assume most parents had done their homework and found out about the swearing.

As for the panto Peter Pan, what can be added to the comments from a reader last week? Nothing really. It was brilliant and we saw it a couple of days after the children went back to school so on the night we went there were about 10 in the stalls area with the bulk of the audience being adults – and we certainly gave Captain Hook a hard time, booing, hissing and then laughing like drains at the comedy.
