No he was taking part in the Bexhillian motorist’s favourite game at this time of the year, ‘avoid the pothole’.

Our roads are an absolute disgrace, one day someone will get seriously injured or even killed as drivers make erratic changes of direction to avoid deep holes and ruts.

Note to East Sussex County Council: white lines around a pothole do not protect wheels and tyres, but then as personal experience tells me East Sussex County Council aren’t particularly concerned because any damage claimant against them receives a printed leaflet that basically absolves them of any responsibility.

A measure of the authority’s apparent lack of common sense in this matter is a recent repair in St George’s Road and yet there is another huge hole a few metres away that remains untouched ?

I have seen and questioned workmen in similar circumstances only to be told ‘we only do the hole listed on our job sheet’ – crazy!

And why bother with the ‘white line man’?

Just send a crew with a truck load of tarmacadam out and about spot repairing any hole they find?
