A note of sadness

I AM pleased, as a volunteer, that the 2012 Littlehampton Town Show will be taking place on Saturday, September 8 in conjunction with the Family Fun Day.

However, there is a note of sadness in my letter that, after the 2011 Town Show, the Conservative majority group on the town council has attempted to destroy this event by separating the Town Show and Family Fun Day.

Now it has achieved its goal – well done, and thanks for kicking us volunteers in the teeth.

With 20 years-plus experience, we have tried to inform the town council that the show will not fit in the Jubilee Hall in Southfields Road.

We had previously been asked to look at St Mary’s Church and its hall for 2012, but this was not big enough, and, importantly, not available.

I note councillor Joyce Bowyer’s comments (Gazette, July 5), and perhaps she needs reminding that the 70-plus people who attended the annual town meeting and voted for the event to remain as at present were representing other organisations, some of which were there to receive awards.

While some may have been allotment holders, I did not see any labels on them to this effect – so where did you get your information from, Mrs Bowyer?

However, the real insult, for me, came from councillor Marian Ayres, who suggested at the recent full town council meeting that we volunteers might wish to contribute to the cost of the show by fund-raising.

Where have you been, Mrs Ayres? We already do this with an annual plant sale and coffee morning, and by going cap-in-hand to businesses for sponsorship. So the answer from me is, no I cannot do any more than I do now and have been doing for the last 20 years!

Finally, I should like to thank the councillors you mentioned by name and party in last week’s Littlehampton Gazette, and the exhibitors and visitors who have supported the Town Show – we, the volunteers, truly appreciate it.
