A professional job

WHILE I have been overseas for the last few weeks, the part of the so-called Next Wave project that covers West Parade has virtually been completed by the contracted company, English Landscapes Ltd.

Although I am vigorously opposed to this despoilment of the once attractive West Parade, there is one aspect of this that has not been covered and which I think should be addressed.

So strong has been the criticism of this multi-million pound project that the site manager simply couldn’t bear even to read the local paper. This was having a bad effect on his morale and I even found myself popping into his office on a regular basis just to cheer him up and to persuade him that, even though this was considered by the local population to be a ruination of their much-loved seafront, nevertheless the work that was being done under his supervision was thoroughly professional. So Wayne Pennington from Charnwood, congratulations on doing your job well. You’ve done exactly what you were paid for.

All the other contractors in this project cannot be blamed either: architects and horticulturalists alike. After all if you were presented with a £5.5 million project, would you turn round and say that your client was totally wrong-headed? I think not.

After all fools and their money are easily separated. It is because it was set up so that there were no independent referees that this scheme is being bulldozed through.

Anyone who opposed this, like Cllr Sue Prochak, was pushed out. Also, I was particularly impressed by the total honesty of horticultural journalist Noel Kingsbury when he announced to your paper that he “had never designed a seaside garden before”.

However, it is important that the townsfolk who have had this crazy waste-of-money scheme inflicted upon them, should be quite clear as to whom they should blame. The primary officer is Tony Leonard, along with leader of the council Carl Maynard and chief executive Derek Stevens. It is only Cllr Christopher Starnes who has prominently come out positively supporting this scheme but without saying in detail why, in his opinion, it is a good idea.

So these are the names that should be inscribed on the “stone of desecration” that should be erected when the multitude of fences are removed next year to reveal the enduring horror in its full ghastliness.
