A rose, or rotten?

Graham Toole-Mackson’s continued defence of the Littlehampton Academy’s performance in comparison with the previous incarnation, Littlehampton Community School, is becoming wearisome.

He refutes the comments in David Marsh’s entirely justifiable letter (Gazette, dated January 23) and yet I shall quote from Mr Mackson’s own letter (Gazette, January 30), in which he claims to be able to denigrate Littlehampton Community School (LCS) ‘with hard evidence’.

My response to that would be: where is it, then?

A principal and the entire governing board are not fired wholesale without reason.

The academy has had a trumped-up sense of its own importance since inception and now the cat is out of the bag.

Shakespeare declared that ‘a rose by any other name would smell as sweet’.

Giving an institution a name of great of import and then wishing it to be so clearly belies the quote.

The Bard was far more apposite when he declared that ‘something is rotten in the state of Denmark’.

The much delayed Ofsted report for the academy will probably prove to be quite revealing in a negative way and then more respect will be shown for the views of Mr Marsh – a much admired educator at the school for four decades.

I’ll take his opinion over the defensive comments of Mr Toole-Mackson any day.
