A threat to liberty

I read Duncan Barkes’ article on mobility scooters with great interest.

I have been driving a mobility scooter for 16 years, being severely disabled with arthritis, and have to walk with crutches, therefore my range is greatly reduced.

I see one of your correspondents suggest that only people who are registered disabled should qualify for a mobility scooter, the thought of which fills me with horror.

I am 84-years-old and without my scooter would be restricted to my home 24 hours a day, as my disablement began after retirement from work , thus disqualifying me from being registered disabled.

I have a partner who suffers from dementia and my outings into the world on my scooter are a must, for my sanity and independence.

I agree that there are some rogue drivers out there, as there are car drivers.

I also agree that a test should be taken before selling these scooters to elderly people, but how could this work, seeing the number of second-hand scooters for sale in the windows of newsagents?

I agree they should have some form of registration, but please be sure a lot of thought is put into this, so as to prevent decent, law-abiding citizens from suffering further loss of liberty.
