A259 won’t cope

County councillor Dr James Walsh’s helpful letter (Gazette, November 28) confirms that the proposed business park west of Mill Lane, Rustington, is not part of a comprehensive development scheme for this southern side of the A259, but involves piecemeal non-conforming development of open land that is based on the erroneous assumption that no precedent will be caused.

Its uncontrolled access to the A259 will oblige eastbound traffic to Rustington and Worthing to travel initially westwards to The Body Shop roundabout, before returning eastwards to the Mill Lane roundabout, involving a two-mile detour.

This will replicate the present problems of traffic mix on the A259 at Highdown and Ferring by similarly reducing the A259’s present efficiency as a major traffic artery between Littlehampton and Rustington.

A full appraisal by Arun District Council’s planning officers of the existing and potential facilities at business parks in Littlehampton and Rustington, to establish whether there is need for this further business park, together with a professional traffic audit and its likely effect on this part of the A259, and safety advice from Sussex Police, would, therefore, seem essential before the planning application is determined.
