Absolutely amazed

I AM absolutely amazed that Roy Scrivener, a Conservative town councillor, could write such a letter about allotments in Littlehampton (Gazette, July 19).

Just in the last few weeks the NHS has been calling for people to be more active and the Government is encouraging the use of allotments.

Are you not aware of this, or just out of touch, Mr Scrivener?

I assume from your letter that you would much prefer to have the land sold off, for yet more buildings?

To suggest a massive hike in rents is absolutely ridiculous in the present climate.

To pay as much as you believe would make running an allotment unviable, but then it appears from your letter that is what you want.

As for suggesting that some people are using the land for “small-scale commercial purposes”, if you have proof of this, then deal with it, as per agreements.

There are, of course, people who genuinely take on allotments and due to various circumstances find that the work is too much for them and then give it up, hence the over growing.

Finally, your point about the thousands of people who pay for the few hundred gardeners – what on earth is the community all about? There are loads of facilities subsidised by us all, but we don’t all use all of them.
