Despite many letters published on the crazy Albion Way cycle lanes, the most dangerous aspect of all seems to have been overlooked: traffic is diverting to far more hazardous routes for pedestrians and cyclists, the Carfax of course, but most notably Hurst Road, which contains both the new Bohunt School and Collyer’s sixth form and probably carries more cyclists than Albion Way ever did.

Children cycling and walking to school are being placed in danger from the extra traffic and resulting pollution, as are commuters cycling to the Station and hospital visitors.

It is already mayhem at school times. Albion Way was little used by cyclists as there are far nicer alternative routes through the town and Horsham Park.

For the few that used it, it was easy for drivers to pass them wide and safe, unlike Hurst Road.

They even have their own priority lights (don’t get me started on the unreliability of this expensive gimmick).

For those who claim the jams are not too bad, may I remind them there are less obvious knock on effects: traffic lights have clearly been rephased to allow more traffic through the single lane sections. There is therefore more congestion on the other links which are delayed to facilitate this, as well as on the aforementioned alternative routes.

This is a pointless, polluting and dangerous scheme to appease a vocal minority whose anti car agenda has priority over any pro cycle safety interest.

It should be scrapped immediately before a child gets hurt or worse in Hurst Road.

Also where are the flashing 20 limits and warning signs for Bohunt which all other schools in Horsham have?
