It was interesting to read your recent Bexhill Observer report about a local window cleaner voluntarily cleaning road signs.

I found East Sussex Highways’ statement about doing the work more safely themselves most amusing.

On March 16, 2016 a section of road by the service 99 return bus stop in Cornfield Road (Eastbourne) was resurfaced. Within only two or three weeks, the soft tarmac heaved over the adjacent curb creating a pedestrian trip hazard and causing grounding of bus doorways

A report to East Sussex Highways on May 10 resulted in the allocation of a case number and an email promise to carry out repairs within 28 days. Some barriers were subsequently erected around the potholes but no repairs executed.

For a long while, repeated follow-up telephone calls fell on deaf ears but eventually an email promised to carry out repairs during January 2017 as part of another nearby project. Guess what – nothing happened.

The latest email reports a meeting on March 14, 2017 to discuss the matter but still no indication of repairs.

Meanwhile, one year after the unsatisfactory resurfacing, barriers are regularly creating a hazard by collapsing into the road and buses still having difficulty pulling into the stops.

Can you imagine East Sussex Highways cleaning road signs? It would surely take over a year to choose a detergent!
