Appalled and disappointed

As a Labour party member who was still out pounding the streets with him less an hour before polls closed last May, I cannot adequately express how appalled and disappointed I am by Councillor Watson's defection to the Tories.

If he was genuinely disenchanted with the current direction of the Labour Party his obvious course would have been to resign and sit as an independent.

But to directly join the Tories – who already having complete dominance of Rother District Council hardly need yet another vote to nod through their motions at council meetings – is simply disgraceful.

And while having canvassed with him I’d be last to deny that Maurice has many personal votes in Sidley (the number of which can however be easily quantified as there were two Labour candidates for his ward and our other candidate Alan Bearne got just 83 votes fewer than him) he knows full well that a majority of the 702 people who voted for him did so because he was standing for the Labour Party.

The honourable and democratic thing to do would be for Mr Watson to stand down from the council and offer himself up for re-election under his new colours.
