The certificate reads that it is:- ‘in recognition of Margaret’s work with her husband in promoting the charity Children of Sumatra. Without their enthusiasm, involvement and service significantly fewer children would have been helped’.

The Children of Sumatra was started over ten years ago when a local girl settled in Sumatra and was horrified by the high incidence of cleft lip and palate. She appealed to the Billingshurst Rotary Club, when Margaret’s husband Stuart immediately started fund raising. Now between seventy-five to an hundred operations are carried out each year, followed by dental work and speech therapy. In a land where the condition is considered by some to be punishment for the sins of the parents, the babies are often abandoned, so the operations and care by the charity make an incalculable difference to the children’s lives. More information on the charity can be found at www.childrenofsumatra.org

Apart from the tireless fundraising, Margaret and Stuart have made two trips to Sumatra to help the children during the period of the operations. Margaret also actively supports the Mary How Trust.

The Award was presented to Margaret by Wendy Eve, the President of Arundel Inner Wheel, at their meeting at The Ship Hotel.
