Arunside help West African children in ‘Day for Change’

The whole school community at Arunside Primary were involved in raising awareness of how UNICEF were supporting children across West Africa.

The areas of learning were centred around geography, English, maths, music, ICT, art and food technology.

The children used globes, atlas’ non fiction books and ICT to research tasks and then produce information in a variety of formats.

Each child had the opportunity to prepare, cook and taste dishes that children across West Africa eat. These included Kookoo, rice cakes, porridge, fish dishes, Jollof rice and Aashe Reshteh.

Staff shared how UNICEF help children to be healthy and go to school regularly in West Africa where both of these issues are a real concern.

Families contributed silver coins to help UNICEF help children in West Africa.

Mrs Slight, headteacher, said: ”Thinking of other children, across the world, and the difference between life in Horsham, UK and life in West Africa provoked much discussion in each class.

“The variety of activities reinforced the knowledge the children had gained during our UNICEF Day for Change. We were pleased to send our silver coin collection to help UNICEF help children in West Africa.”
