Arunside pupils link mathematics and art as part of exhibition

The staff took aspects of mathematics, such as counting, positional language, shape, symmetry, tessellation, measures, angles, problem solving, estimation, number, ratio, proportion and scale then asked the children key questions linked to the stimulus of a piece of famous artwork.

The children were introduced to the work of Piet Mondrian, Paul Klee, Andy Warhol, Wassily Kandinsky and Rosyln Ann Kemp exploring links between mathematics and art.

The staff and children then used their ideas to create pieces of creature design in both 2D and 3D, incorporating mathematical skills and concepts they had gained whilst linking these two subjects together.

Mrs. Slight, Headteacher, said, “Families, Governors and friends of the school, who visited the exhibition, exclaimed at the creativity, mathematical knowledge and skills of the children that were presented in a very colourful way.

The children were very proud to explain how they arrived at the work on display. The staff enjoyed linking the skills of both subjects, motivation children to demonstrate their enjoyment of learning.”
