As we go down this already uncertain and windy road, it is in nobody’s interests to remain entrenched in the remain/leave factions.
Rather than waiting in vain for leaving the EU to heal these wounds, to properly address the divisions in the country, what we need going forward is political will and consensus.
We need a unity that respects the result of the referendum without ignoring the views of the 48 per cent, and importantly looks beyond Europe as the divisive question in British politics.
On this matter, the two party leadership elections being fought in this post-Brexit environment won’t go far enough. It does not suffice that a few hundred thousand electors still reeling from the Leave vote will determine the direction of the country. Since the vote that has left politics in the UK beyond recognition, as we cross into uncharted territory, the government surely must seek a new mandate to govern.
