Be fair to Littlehampton

I read your lead article (Gazette, May 23) about the housebuilding plans for Arun district with some dismay.

I fully understand the need for new homes. Indeed, I have accepted that the North Littlehampton development will go ahead, and despite assurances the full total of this development will be 2,000 new homes (once follow-on applications are inevitably submitted).

What concerns me is this. If other areas in Arun district campaign fluently and effectively that their areas shouldn’t have new homes, we in Littlehampton should not, then, become the default ‘dumping site’ for new homes. This is both bad planning and unfair to the town itself.

What is needed urgently is sensible infrastructure in the town now, for example the construction of the Lyminster bypass and a proper road infrastructure system to cope with already-agreed projects like the North Littlehampton plan.

Littlehampton must be a balanced community and social housing and private housing must be built together.

If Littlehampton development proceeds in a default manner, in a knee-jerk way, with an emphasis wholly on social housing for example, we create very imbalanced communities.

For an example, the old market site in Littlehampton is 100 per cent social housing. I would urge Arun District Council to be aware of this trend and ensure communities like Littlehampton are not ‘dumped upon’, but developed in a thorough and sensitive manner.
