‘Beach grabbing...’

WE have heard of garden grabbing before.

Well, we now have beach grabbing – filling the spaces between existing beach huts with other huts.

This is the plan – or at least planning application LU/247/11 – by Inspire Leisure to build six new beach huts on the Promenade at Littlehampton.

This is certainly lateral thinking by Inspire Leisure and will be a nice little earner for it when the huts are rented out.

However, this is not really fair for the rest of us who walk, jog or cycle along the Promenade to enjoy the view.

Would you like more beach huts along the promenade, instead of the coastal views?

On this basis we could all apply to build one.

If this is implemented, we will have an almost solid wall of 116 beach huts blocking off Sea Road from the beach.

Inspire Leisure, think again, please, and forget this plan.

John Stride, chief executive of Inspire Leisure, replies: “The reason for the application is that demand for beach huts in Littlehampton has been very strong for the last few years.

“Whilst historically beach hut demand has dropped off in Littlehampton during national economic downturns, this is not the case now and it is very pleasing that demand has remained strong. Perhaps it is just one small sign of the positive light in which Littlehampton is perceived?”
