Beeching's cut got us by-pass

I WAS very interested in the recent article with reference to the railway, "All aboard for a superb trip down memory line" (Herald, November 1).

I played a large part in attempting to stop the closure of the Shoreham to Horsham line when the Beeching Plan was first published.

A lot of work by a lot of people failed to stop the closure, and the rest is history.

I remember very well appearing before the traffic commissioners at a hearing in Brighton, supporting West Sussex County Council in a last-ditch attempt to stop the closure.

The parish councils of Bramber, Steyning and Upper Beeding were all involved.

The only good thing to come out of what was then considered to be a disaster, was the construction of the Beeding/Bramber/Steyning bypass, using a lot of the land of the old railway line.

I also played a part as chairman of the Beeding, Bramber and Steyning bypass committee in pressurising West Sussex County Council to implement the plan, which was not an easy task.

That committee was formed by elected members of the three parish councils.
