Bench build is going ahead

IN response to the letter "Bench removal is jumping the gun" (Gazette, February 18), please can I point out the following:

* We are not "jumping the gun", as we already have the necessary planning permission to go ahead with building the bench;

* The current permission, granted by Arun's development control committee in November, allows the bench to be built to the full length of the promenade between the East Beach Caf and Harbour Park.

The new planning application is only requesting a revision of materials for the slats. It does not change the main structure made of stainless steel, which will remain the same as in the first application;

* Before we can start building there are ground works that need to be carried out and it is important that we do these as soon as possible to make the site safe before the weather starts to improve and public access increases;

* If we do not obtain permission for the different slat materials then a reduced project using the original materials will still be able to proceed.
