‘Bike Day’ in Arundel

People of Arundel came out in Sunday’s sun to see current plans and new ideas for cycling and walking facilities in the town and to say what they would like to see too, at Arundel Agenda 21 community group’s stalls in the High Street and alongside the river.

They were also offered guided bike rides and ‘pimp your bike’ decorating.

Maps and plans showed:

- Cycle route plans, currently scheduled, to go from Arundel station to the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust - leading to the Downs;

- Proposed cycle routes from Ford station to the town, through the town centre to join the Downs route;

- Proposals for siting bike parking around town;

- Proposals for an off-road path along the A27 from Ford Road to Arundel Station

- A 20mph zone for the town.

Kay Wagland, chair of Arundel Agenda 21 said: “Arundel badly needs cycle facilities for people living and working here to get around easily and quickly by bike and for children to cycle to school.

“It is currently very difficult without cycle paths or bike parking. Lots of people have come up with some good ideas today and we’ll take them all to West Sussex County Council.”

Councillor Angela Standing of Arundel Town Council, volunteering at the Bike Day added: “There is also great potential for Arundel to be a hub for visitors coming by train and using bikes to get to the Downs and the coast.”

Unforeseen circumstances meant that Dr Bike, couldn’t be provided at the Bike Day, but all those who turned up looking for bike checks and basic repairs, can expect a replacement free session in Arundel a little later in the summer.

AA21 is a community group pursuing the agenda for the 21st century: sustainable communities, for us and following generations.The current project is to improve cycling facilities in Arundel and encourage more people to cycle.
